THROUGH MISTS - Awaken The Sleeping Village (Track Premiere)

We make a deliberate attempt to keep things from getting too stagnant 'round these parts. However, every once in a while, we slumbering scribes are hit with something utterly outside the confines of expectation: take today's premiere as a prime example. Through Mists' "Awaken the Sleeping Village" is a track that heavily features our moniker, and, beyond that, was inspired by a prompt we randomly tweeted.

This is new. This is unexpected. Most importantly, this is cool as hell. I'm honored to be running this premiere here today.

The prompt in question? On July 3rd, I cast the following into the void: "Death metal song where the solo starts a third of the way through and then just keeps fuckin' going until the song ends." Through Mists immediately responded "Challenge accepted." And here we are, challenge met with great aplomb. There's a lot I love about this track, from the muscular out-of-the-gate menace, to the progressive edge, to the juxtaposition of playful keys, to the gleeful triumph of the chorus. There's a wonderful jubilance on display, which is only magnified at the magical moment 1/3 of the way into the track wherein the solo opens up like a morning glory at dawn. Its an immediate process, and with the foresight of knowing how this is supposed to go down, one can only sit back and bask in the glamour of the moment. The vocals do remerge to keep the track grounded around a consistent motif, but then we're back to the delightful excess of the thoroughly extensive solo.

Love of the craft aside, I sincerely love witnessing an artist try something new for the sheer hell of it, and Through Mists has been a pleasure to follow as of light. Indeed, if this track isn't  indication enough of that ethos at play, there's a cover of Darude's "Sandstorm" dropping as we speak. It's a fun Friday at camp Through Mists. I, for one, will continue to indulge. 

"Awaken The Sleeping Village" successfully demonstrates that a fairly absurd song structure can result in a wholeheartedly engaging single. Beyond that, the track has successfully, y'know, awoken our slumbering populace from slumber. That alone is not an easy debt to repay.
