Written by: Crypt Tender Another edition of ON THE HORIZON? The fact that this oft-forgotten segment is experiencing a sudden limelight indicates that A. there is a lot of good music in the pipeline, and B. we inhabitants of the Sleeping Village have tapped into a mystic pool of motivation, becoming, I can only imagine, annoyingly prolific in the process. We have a strict policy that any crypt-related items are sent directly to me, the illustrious and revered Crypt Tender [break for polite applause, sounds of fearful admiration]. As such, the entities that oversee the promo pit have gifted me this release announcement and accompanying lead single from heavy metal doomsters Crypt Sermon. I haven't yet had the pleasure of drinking deep of the forthcoming The Stygian Rose, out June 14th from Dark Descent Records, but I have played "Heavy Is The Crown of Bone" no fewer than ten times since receiving. Which, if we're being honest, makes me a bit of an expert on the matter. As we have come to expect, Crypt Sermon present a consummate blend of heavy metal and epic doom, reveling in a shadowy and vaguely mythical atmosphere. "Heavy Is The Crown of Bone" is a dark yet regal track, beginning with a traditional canter and ending with a heftier doom-laden grandiosity. In the first half, the central riff is simple yet driving, allowing various flourishes the space to shine. The vocals are authoritative, and I'm a particular fan of the rich bass presence, which provides significant interest prior to the excellent solo. The track itself isn't flashy, and demonstrates a classic refinement. It rewards repeat listens. It also doesn't give away too much in regards to Crypt Sermon's overall intentions for the album. In their announcement, the band indicates that The Stygian Rose will be a varied affair, and I'm curious to see what direction the next single goes. And, lest it be forgot, the video itself--credit to The C.O.I.N.--is gorgeous, full stop. This is as purely cinematic as music videos come, and only helps to reinforce the epic aesthetic. Top notch work. Consider this Crypt Tender suitably impressed. Crypt Sermon - The Stygian Rose will be released June 4th via Dark Descent Records. Shoutout to that killer cover artwork by Brooks Wilson. Find the pre-order here, and listen/watch below!
