Written by: The Administrator Given an interest in both cryptids and excellent music, I am a proud Mothman and the Thunderbirds fanboy. Ever since hearing and subsequently reviewing the crisply remastered version of "Simpson = Real Footage," one of my favorite tracks from 2021's debut Into the Hollow, I've been dying for news of a follow-up album. Into The Hollow presented a near-endlessly intriguing and eclectic weirdo blend of prog and sludge, but over time, Alex Parkinson has increasingly leaned into more infectiously poppy songwriting and production that feels lush and oh-so clean. The latter comes from Egor Lappo, who has polished away sludgy scuzz to exceptional results. The weirdness remains, however, and in the latest stage of evolution, the band labels their blend of "adventurous prog, thrilling hard rock, and dreamy psychedelia" as "dream metal." I'll be damned if that isn't a damn fine descriptor. Which brings us, conveniently enough, to today's premiere. Mothman and the Thunderbirds will be releasing the intensely enjoyable Portal Hopper on July 12th. We're honored to present here the lead single and album opener "Ruby Skies." Check it out below via the bombastic lyric video, and, as always, we'll await your arrival on the other side! "Ruby Skies" is, in my opinion, a true indication of a level up. Moreover, as the opening track, it serves as an apt harbinger for the sheer quality represented by Mothman and the Thunderbird's sophomore effort as a whole. Built around a thoroughly anthemic chorus and an energetic yet dreamy demeanor, the track is bombastic and jubilant. I'm fondly reminded of Devin Townsend's Empath, albeit perhaps more in creative spirit than in sound per se. The opening riff is immediately engaging, and across the breadth, that engagement never falters. I used the word infectious above and I'll happy use it again: the chorus and assorted motifs littered throughout are addictive in a fashion that mimics the sweet rush of a slyly charismatic pop banger. While the album at large brings in a wide variety of sights and sounds, "Ruby Skies" feels intent on nailing the opening before peeling back the layers of oddity. Alex has wholeheartedly committed to writing a hooky and hard-rockin' anthem. Also of note are the vocals, which feel more confident than those on Into The Hollow. There's a nasally whine that contrasts nicely with the bright and bouncy guitar. The vocal effects utilized towards the midpoint lend a little spaced-out texture. Alex has a great voice for proggy rock music, and here it fits more naturally than ever before. In sum? This is very good stuff. "Ruby Skies" is a killer track, and Portal Hopper is a killer album. It is, indeed, all I hoped for and more. I'm excited to witness the reception once this one drops on July 12th. In the meantime, hit that preorder if you are so inclined! Find it here.
