I love Fuzznaut. I love Fuzznaut in the same way I love a warm quilt or the alluring drone of a rainstorm over a tin roof. Fuzznaut tends to ooze comfort, writing the kind of music that effortlessly epitomizes calmness in aural form. This new single--"Spacerock," dropping this Friday, May 3rd--continues an increasingly trademark trend. Although undoubtedly spaced out and cosmic in scope, there's nothing here that recalls the chilling vastness and isolation of space. This track, like unto everything else Fuzznaut has released to date, is warm and lush and oh-so immersive. Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, let's usher in today's track in question. We're honored and pleased to present the stellar "Spacerock" below. Give it a well-deserved listen. We'll meet ye, as always, on the other side!
In terms of general vibe, "Spacerock" feels a little more forthright than February's equally excellent "Sufferlove," which in my opinion had a more melancholic and perhaps even stressed undercurrent. But for all intents and purposes, "Spacerock" doesn't break the Fuzznaut mold. The layered guitar moves in an unhurried and leisurely fashion, both in terms of pace and a general lack of interest in sounding meticulously planned. Crafted around improvisation, there's a liberating off-the-cuff mentality at play, even with all the consideration given to texture. And, lest it be forgotten, the reverb is near-mythical in its mighty presence.
Around the midpoint, a more weighty riff kicks into gear, lending a certain groundedness to the nebulous form. Throw some thick low end groove and a crashing cymbal or two on that riff and you've got a stoner doom banger on your hands. But rather than falling too far into that particular trap, Fuzznaut ushers in a newer and more gentle passage. And so the track ebbs and flows through the runtime, albeit with a smoothness that rejects the notion of visible seams. The track's conclusion does ramp up that aforementioned heft into a fairly crushing climax. There's some grit to that riff, and it plays off the general established atmosphere quite well. "Spacerock" feels like the cinematic soundtrack to planetary asteroid bombardment, witnessed whilst relaxing in IMAX recliners. It's a massive track on its own, and repeat listens indicate that it may indeed be some of my favorite work thusfar when considering the Fuzznaut discography as a whole. Nothing more to say, and nothing more to do but indulge once more in that sweet Fuzznautian immersion. In that spirit, stream "Spacerock" above! The single will be available via Bandcamp on May 3rd.
