Upon discussing the state of our abyssal promo pit with the Village's own Pit Herder, we came to realize that there are a great many unsung demo tapes swimming in the depths. They often go unnoticed, unfairly so. As we were ruminating, the Pit Herder recommended that we ink-splattered scribes create, and I quote: "a brand new column dedicated solely to demos that you will get excited about in the short term yet inevitably abandon in several month's time?" To which I responded, "splendid idea!" And so here we are, having dredged a variety of delightful and terrifying specimens from amongst the pit's weeds, discarded carcasses, and other assorted detritus. Today's catch: the 3-track demo from Singapore's End Of All, released digitally on February 24th of this year. Let's get into it, shall we?
End Of All refer to themselves via their bandcamp bio as "dummy death metal," and I'm frankly inclined to agree. This is some conspicuously ignorant stuff--death metal made by hardcore kids with the apparent intent of writing some downright skullcrushing music. These three tracks
are palpably primitive, littered with breakdowns and anchored by perhaps the thickest low end I've heard on a demo. These tracks are built on a concrete foundation, and when things get low and slow--take the crushing outro to "Paradise Lost," for example--I can feel my braincells actively decaying as they slam against the interior on my cranium. I am en route to empty head. No thoughts. Just breakdown. Instrumentally, DEMO feels incredibly tight for a demo tape. Like, this production is much better than the majority of official releases of the brutal death variety. Everything feels so heavy and present and tangible. The performances are strong across the board, both in the monolithic midst of the aforementioned breakdowns and during the more urgently assertive moments. The notably deep vocals are particularly well done, managing to elevate the brutality even further. As a unit, End Of All are operating on a very impressive level. The member's individual experience in other bands clearly shows, and if this is where they are starting, I'm very excited to see what they manage to produce next. Both I and the Pit Herder will be keeping an eye out. End Of All - DEMO was released Feruary 24th, 2024, and will eventually see release on tape via Rotted Life records (USA), Demonical Devastation (Germany) and ThreatOfDestruction (Indonesia). In the meantime, find it on bandcamp here!
