I must admit: I feel like a bit of a tease when it comes to premiering this particular track. Listening to a single song in isolation from By Torchlight's forthcoming A Night To Remember is a little like ripping a random chapter out of a mystery novel and attempting to piece together the narrative without a true beginning or end. However, a lil' intrigue goes a long way, and in the case of "A Dangerous Game," today's track in question, I hope yer investigative acumen is primed and ready to fire. A Night To Remember is, in the artist's words, a thrilling tale of betrayal and murder. The narrative follows the trials (and trails) of private detective Stephen North, who catches the scent of one murderous Mr. White. Hijinks ensue. "A Dangerous Game" is the fourth track, and, as ye shall soon hear, details the a mourder most foul. Listen below! As always, we'll be lurking on the other side. By benefit of existing in a more rock-oriented arena than the majority of music that we cover within our humble halls, "A Dangerous Game" is sonically less extreme than the typical Sleeping Village fare. It presents an excellent break from the norm in this sense--but beyond genre characteristics, the track itself is one hell of a fun number. It oozes personality. The story is engaging. What more could you ask? The proggier alt-rock vibes are offset by a certain sneering menace. Indeed, the track carries itself through the shadows with a noir-esque sensibility, particularly in the case of the vocals, which suit the persona of a gritty hard-boiled narrator to a veritable tee. Built on the back of a riff that bounces as much as it lurches, "A Dangerous Game" presents the aforementioned narrative with little ambiguity. As such, the story itself serves as a primary hook--the scene of the crime is described in bloody detail, and the subsequent hunt for the culprit ropes the listener in with little hesitation. Notably, the track does a great job at maintaining the immersive intensity, from the buzzy distortion across the chorus to the keys on the back half sitting under a muttered refrain. "A Dangerous Game" is a single slice of what A Night To Remember offers as a whole package, both sonically and narratively. That said, it succeeds as a single on the basis of whetting my appetite. I'm excited to hear where the murder mystery evolves from here. By Torchlight - A Night To Remember will be released August 5th via Take Over Mars Records. Preorder here.
