Written by: The Administrator If, dear reader, you have traipsed through the swampy environs of underground stoner doom any time in the past 18 months, there's a very good chance you have encountered a lil' band named Bog Wizard. These self-proclaimed peddlers of nerd doom--or "fat riffs and natural crits," for the more poetic among us--released a (well-received) debut album last year, a split with Dust Lord this spring, and are on the cusp of dropping their sophomore LP, Miasmic Purple Smoke, out Dec. 3rd via The Dregs Records. Their track "Swamp Golem" served as the mighty closer of our own Caravan of Doom, so, like, we're obviously big fans 'round these parts. Needless to say, these magicians from the mire have been putting in the work, and ain't slowing down anytime soon. Thank goodness. We're pleased and honored to present here today a premiere of the lyric video for "Miasmic Purple Smoke," the title track and second single from the aforementioned forthcoming album. Before we scare ye away with our ceaseless blathering: give it a well-deserved watch and listen below. Dig in! If yer already a fan of this three-piece party of adventurer's thick riffs and Gygaxian aesthetic, "Miasmic Purple Smoke" undoubtedly satisfies. If not, I sincerely hope yer whistle hath been sufficiency wet. Bog Wizard exude a lovely rawness and grounded organic sensibility. This track's strength comes not from sheer fuzz or weight--indeed, the majority feels a tad more light-footed than the majority of their prior work--but rather from its strong sense of meditative repetition. The central riff is simple and does not deviate without providing substantial warning, and the drums march along at a deliciously languorous pace. Over the track's 7-plus minute runtime, the instrumentation seeps, permeating the entirety of the listener's consciousness with a subtle powerful presence. And! Lest it be forgot: the video itself, to its credit, is equally meditative in its rendition of the titular miasmic purple smoke. As fans of longform doom acts such as YOB will note, there's a certain magic that occurs when a catchy lil' riff loops in ouroborosian fashion. Bog Wizard wield that potent magic with a level of skill one might only expect from their, well, wizardry status. The result is song that entrances, and if that isn't a win, I dunno what is. Bog Wizard set the bar high with From The Mire, and arguably even higher when they turned up the aggression a tad on Four Tales of the Strange. Miasmic Purple Smoke, however, feels like their best work yet. Don't let this one go unnoticed in the oncoming flood of year end lists--if you enjoyed the lyric video above, consider picking up that sweet pre-order! Bog Wizard - Miasmic Purple Smoke will be released Dec. 3rd via The Dregs Records.
