FRESH MEAT FRIDAY: June 12th, 2020

6/12/2020

Every Friday, a wagon arrives at the Sleeping Village’s gates, stuffed to the brim with our sustenance for the following week. Today is the day we must offload all this new music, and so, in the process, we thought it would be worthwhile to share some of our choice picks from this veritable mass of fresh meat. This is what we’ll be listening to today here at the Village HQ. We hope you join us in doing so!

On the docket for today, June 12th, 2020:
Behold... The Arctopus, Lord, Foetal Juice, DECONSECRATION

Picture
Behold... The Arctopus - Hapeleptic Overtrove
(Willowtip / P2)

Time to ruffle some feathers.  BTA do
have an endearing shtick, but at this stage in the game, I think we need to address the fact that their brand of progressive metal results in albums that are more a collection of ideas, and less a collection of tracks. Indeed, as fellow Villager
Izzy recently argued, this album sounds more like segments from a rehearsal than an album proper. Sure, the hyper-technicality is impressive--it's instrumentally all over the place in the best of ways, something truly to behold--but I fail to see how this album succeeds as an album. If you're here to witness the workshop-esque qualities of BAT, this could very well indeed be the best representation of their baffling sound. All told, I do buy the statement that  Hapeleptic Overtrove is at the forefront of prog wackery. I don't however, believe that Behold... The Arctopus are necessarily pushing metal in a new direction.

Lord - Chaos Raining
(Independently Released)

Let's get the obvious out of the way: Lord are an excellent band.
Chaos Raining, despite containing little new content, is no exception to the rule. The title track, taken from their prior album, is offered here in two formats, including the OG ripper and an extended cut. A new track, "A World Insane," helps flesh out the package of this limited edition EP. All told, both (or all three, depending how you coutn it?) are stellar tracks, leaning heavily into both the progressive and power ends of the metal spectrum. Lord employ a potent sense of melodic bombast to great effect, resulting in a predictably ramble-rousing endeavor. If yer unfamiliar with these Aussie stalwarts, I highly recommend allowing this EP to serve as an entry point. If you are familiar, I recommend you check this one out--while unessential, it's an undeniable banger. So, in short...recommended!

...and Oceans, WitchUrn, Holden, Hadewijch, and ÆNON

Picture
...And Oceans - Cosmic World Mother

(Season of Mist)

Let's not draw this out: symphonic black metallers ...And Oceans have made a remarkably  triumphant return from the depths of increasingly industrial and electronic experimentation. Here, the meloblack is (largely) back, with a renewed focus on atmospherics and melodic composition. Shylmagoghnar feels like an apt (albeit lesser) comparison, as ...And Oceans execute a blend of powerful aggression, triumphant and near-grandiose symphonics, and and gorgeous sonic accoutrements with a grace and confidence that very, very few can match. Cosmic World Mother is the kind of album that sucks you in an spits you out with the desire to immediately dive back in. This is a wonderous return to form for ...And Oceans, and is, undoubtably, an album that I will be enjoying for quite some time.

WitchUrn  - The Debt

(Self Released)

...But, dear readers, I am excited to inform you that today's best blackened-affiliated record may actually
be
the debut album from WitchUrn. At risk of gushing, The Debt delivers almost everything I love in a single package--vicious thrashy freneticism, forward-thinking aggression, dynamic (and at times damn near surprising) composition, emotive vocals, and just enough braggadocio to exercise technical prowess without flaunting it. There’s just enough death metal weight to lend the affair a groundedness that blackened thrash all-too-oft lacks, and just enough progressive meandering to allow the audience a moment to breathe. I do wish that the acoustics of the intro were implemented a tad more, but...what else can I say? This is an absolute masterclass in how to write a (one man?!) debut album. Bravo. At this rate, a full-length review will undoubtedly follow.

Holden  - Ursa Minor

(Self Released)

Groove-laden post-sludge? Rest assured: this slumbering scribe is always down. On Ursa Minor, Holden demonstrate that they have studied long and hard at the school of Conan-esque riffage, leaning into sluggish heft with a languid aplomb. Meanwhile, some harsh vocals punctuate the enormity of the tone. As drawn-out riffs are the name of the game, this is not music that grabs your throat and demands attention. Rather, it feels cinematic in scope--a flowing soundtrack, not a series of distinct tracks. As such, it serves quite nicely as background tunage for those times when you want some slow riffs but aren’t in the mood to focus intently. I, for one, in spring-cleaning fervor, will be spending the day sweeping the cobwebs and mouse bones from our drafty scriptorium, Holden spinning all the while.

Hadewijch - Herbal Doom

(Electric Valley Records)

Sometimes we all need to sink into the ethereal plant-based bliss of post-rock infused doom. Post-doom, perhaps? Who knows. In any case, Hadewijch deliver a single track-EP with the sole intent, presumably, in helping us calm our trouble minds. This track feels relentlessly organic--like falling asleep on the forest floor and become the compost heap upon which a garden grows. "Salvia" is dreamy, droney, and tastefully heavy. The meld of naturalism and unconventional stoner doom convention is pretty damn seamless.

As aforementioned 'round these parts, this particular scribe is consistently sober--but this EP/song makes me feel otherwise. Mission accomplished. If you've got 19 minutes to simply chill, I highly recommend you sample some Herbal Doom. Thank me later.

BONUS TRACK RELEASE!
Picture
ÆNON  - In All Honesty

(New Single!)

Normally I'm not one to go for metalcore, progressive or otherwise, but sometimes you need A. some meaty breakdowns and B. a melodic kick in the ass. ÆNON deliver both with their latest single--a Make Them Suffer/Parkway Drive-esque explosion of headbangable fury. Of particular note is the whiplash-inducing (in a good way!) use of tempo changes throughout the breadth of the track. It tugs and pulls and throws the listener, but never loses sight of the core sense of melodicism. Definitely a solid showing--I'm excited to see more from these guys. Check 'em out!

INTRODUCTION:

Unlike many of our contemporaries, we here at Sleeping Village Industries regard the act of reviewing as a purely objective process. Hence, our staff operate exclusively within the bounds of rigorous scientific methodology. Following a comprehensive certification program, we dedicate countless hours studying the latest sources of mind-bending and soul-crushing stimulation in the name of the betterment of our society. Our latest study discusses the impact of a particular stimulus (hereby referred to as Intronaut) on the nervous system of our test subject (hereby referred to as Heavy Grinder.) Upon completion of this article, Sleeping Village Industries recommends that the public takes proper precautions when conducting their own experimentation, though we consider our findings to be the authoritative conclusions. Conduct future testing at your own risk. - Ed.

Note: there has been a veritable tsunami of high-quality releases today. This is but a fraction of the stuff you should check out. Reviews in forthcoming days will seek to fill the gaps! - Ed.
On the docket for today, April 24th, 2020:
Marmalade Knives, Total Fucking Destruction, Sölicitör, and Lord Fowl (and Firelink!)

Picture
Marmalade Knives  - Amnesia
(Electric Valley Records)

In a week with a particularly hard-hitting release that has absorbed much of my time (read: Ulcerate,) something with a laid-back vibe has been necessary to maintain a certain balance. To this end, Marmalade Knives succeed enormously. On their debut, these Santa Cruzian purveyors of proggy psychedelia unleash an instrumental exploration of astral planes. In other words: this is music with which to relax to. Rather than grabbing your attention outright--with the exception of the driving "Xayante"--this album exists as a calming expedition through equally ethereal and funky waters. Notably, these guys demonstrate very strong technical and compositional proficiency. I'm excited to see how they expand their progressive tendencies!

Total Fucking Destruction - ...to be alive at the end of the world (Translation Loss Records)

You wouldn't think that a band with a name such as Total Fucking Destruction could possibly deal in subtlety. Sure, avant-garde isn't new to these guys, but this is a new level: ...to be alive at the end of the world is a delightfully nuanced, experimental, and well-balanced piece. While grind elements are still hanging around, serving as an anchor of sorts, a deliberately atmospheric and melancholic vibe asserts a certain dominance over the project as a whole. As such, typical grind brevity/aggression is well-represented in the meat of this TFD sandwich, but the title opener and 11-minute closer add a level of bleak flair that borders on indie-rock angst. A slow-burn vision of the apocalypse, if e'er the was. More like Total Fucking Destruction of expectations, am I right?

VILLAGE CRYPT: Paara - Riitti

4/4/2020

Here at the Sleeping Village, we keep our most revered albums in....a very special place. Their time may have gone, but they are certainly not forgotten. As ye may have noted, we're trawling through many of our 2018 Album of the Year picks--many of which, I'm pleased to state, still hold up today. On the docket for today: my personal #3 album of '18. Read on!

Picture
Like dissecting a joke, the process of over-analysis often kills the magic...but sometimes, it serves to enhance. The latter holds true here, & I can say with great satisfaction that over multiple attempts to pen this review, Paara’s Riitti has only tightened its delightful stranglehold. This is a masterfully crafted & richly emotive album, expressing folkish and blackened influences with a vibrancy eschewing mere imitation. Comparable to the glory days of Insomnium, or perhaps Moonsorrow if their songwriting wasn’t so, well, bland, each of these four tracks drives forward at natural gait without ever feeling overdone. This is particularly so in the case of intro track "Viimeinen virta"--the longest of the bunch, no less. A brave move with spectacular payoff.

VILLAGE CRYPT: DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - Deconstruction

5/25/2019

Here at the Village, we keep our most revered albums in a very special place. As you may recall, a few months ago, one fearless Villager took you on a wild ride through the Village Crypt, along with a special guest. This time around,  Loveloth is back in the Crypt with--you guessed it--another Devin feature.

Picture
After Addicted, there was a year and a half of silence until one faithful day, the Devin Townsend Project unleashed not one but two records, Ghost and Deconstruction. Each represents an extreme. Today we delve into the convoluted, absurd and insane Deconstruction, which is actually the record that started my reviewing journey. Three years ago, I wanted to do a review of it for Metal Archives, but the admins deemed it as too long and detailed and I completely understand why. However, the Village bears no mind to length *insert dick joke here* as long as it's good, and I definitely improved over these past few years, so prepare for a wild ride because this record deserves it. But before we get into the nitty gritty, a few facts about Deconstruction.

It's a concept album but it's an absurd and hilarious one, just like the previously eternalized Ziltoid. The story revolves around a man obsessed with finding the true nature of reality, and we watch him travel to Hell itself where he meets the Devil who grants him his wish. There is a twist to the story and it comes in a shape of a cheeseburger. The cheeseburger contains the secrets of the universe but our protagonist is a "vegemetarian" so his whole struggle was pointless. There is a positive message cleverly hidden here, and it's basically overcoming your fears and moving on, and the chaotic nature of the record reflects it.

With Devin at the helm and Ryan Van Poederooyen and Dirk Verbeuren (who I shall continue to refer as "The Dirk") as the two main drummers, this would be enough for most musicians, but not for Devin who decided to go all out. What we ended up with here is the single best line-up of guest musicians of all time (sorry Ayreon). People such as Fredrik Thorendal of that underground band Meshuggah, Mikael Åkerfeldt, Ihsahn, Joe Duplantier, Tommy Giles, Greg Puciato, Floor Jansen and Prague's very own Philharmonic Orchestra are just some of the names that will pop up on this insane record, and all of their contributions elevate Deconstruction to glorious and flatulent heights.

Picture
With that large set of information out of the way, we can finally jump in the rabbithole and see why I hold Decon in such high regard. Things start off innocently enough with the soft, electronic tinges of "Praise The Lowered". That innocence slowly fades as the track subtly adds new elements and reaches a breaking point midway through, but the chaos slowly subsides and morphs into "Stand" which, similarly to the previous track, plays with build-ups and dynamics. But this time we have Åkerfeldt and chugging in the mix and here our protagonist reaches the fiery depths of Hell but the sound palette that surrounds this voyage is oddly grandiose.

What follows is "Juular" and here is where we plummit into complete chaos. With insane, unrelenting Dirk blasts that mimic a steam locomotive on speed, "Juular" barrels through and leaves nothing in its wake. It's quirky, frantic and the closest thing we got to SYL in a long time. I would even say how it surpasses SYL. The addition of Ihsahn in the chorus certainly doesn't take away from the experience either.

Now what follows is the pinnacle of Deconstruction. It starts with "Planet Of The Apes", the first of three insane epics and it contains one of the funniest, most unexpected and relevant lines in modern metal: "While we all have lots of bands who influence still...we all rip off Meshuggah!" I vividly remember laughing out loud when hearing this for the first time, and you would be surprised how many times this occurred during the entirety of this absurd record.

Picture
However, absurdity and humor isn't the only thing carrying "Planet Of The Apes" and the rest of the record, it's everything. Even the extremely layered production works but I do wish there was more breathing room, especially for the choir which strengthens each vocal line by each guest. Things like chanting Jesus, Jihad, Jesus in the background of "Planet Of Apes" only add to my resolve.

With the frenetic "Sumeria" passing the middle mark of the record, the colossal "The Mighty Masturbater" appears, and is the culmination of everything we heard and more. Mind-boggling arpeggios and sweep picks, electronic breakdowns, swingy carnival-like bursts, and a huge buildup near the middle point of the track where Devin holds a speech. We get one of the best builds up of all time and while it lasts a bit too long, it never ceases to bring down chills down my spine. The crowd yells and Greg Puciato chants morph from "We praise God! He lives inside of our hearts!" to "We praise ourselves! We live inside of our minds" to finally "We praise Satan! He lives inside of our hearts!" and each time we reach a new level, his screams become more vitriolic and intense. This undoubtedly represents the decadence mankind is going through, and our infinite greed and selfishlesness. It's overwhelming, unrestrained, and brilliant, and the fact I spent writing one paragraph about one song speaks enough about how deep this record is and how much I love it.

Picture
Deconstruction is easily Devin's most technical, complex, and insane record he's ever made, and I seriously doubt he will ever top it. From the fourth-wall breaking parodies of sweep picking and arpeggios while doing exactly that, to fart jokes and choirs screaming "cheeseburger" while he melts the universe on his comically large Flying V, one could easily say this is too much and I agree, it will be for the majority. Ear fatigue was real, even for me, but something always called me back to it. It's the insane amount of details that resides in this ludicrous work of art, and it only becomes more apparent after your brain processes what's actually happening. Deconstruction was a challenge to Devin and it is to the listener, and that's the most exciting part. Despite it being too much, I still consider this to be a ground-breaking, unbelievably complex, and fun record that has a lot going for it, perhaps too much. So if this chaotic review piqued your interest, feel free to enter what I feel is the most alluringly insane record of all time and more than worthy pick to enter the Village Crypt where it will reside peacefully for the first time in its lifetime.
