 Captain Graves is back. Guess he's too busy writing reviews to destroy worlds these days. To each their own, I guess. - Ed. _______________________________________________ I've been on a rampage here in The Village. These stoned fools have dubbed me "Space Friend" thanks to Concilium, and it really makes my intergalactic blood boil. I guess all the flak I send their way is really getting to them. Solving this with humor isn't really conducive with my way of thinking. I prefer setting folks on fire, and then watching Varic eat their planet whole. Here we have Blackwater Holylight, and I'm actually honored to write this review. Their reverb drenched self-titled was a delight, so I was ecstatic to find they had a new album (Veils of Winter) on the horizon with Riding Easy Records. "Seeping Secrets" comes in with that beautiful sludge that I cant get enough of. The haunting quality of the pop-esque vocals, and then some delicious vocal harmonies. This track is quite interesting and captivating. It definitely has a Black Sabbath feel to the music. Like a pure homage to the Lords of stoned out metal. With "Motorcycle" they're coming in dirty again, then a switch to a creepy guitar riff. Back and forth between said riff, and a sludged out break. The breakdown makes me want to smash this planet right now. As the Decimator of Worlds, this could be very bad for you all, when I catch them in Brooklyn later this month. Creepy, crawly "Spiders" starts with a guitar line I feel I've heard before, another homage to the days of old? Then comes in a cool bass driven melody, they are really killing it with dynamics, and this is only the 3rd track. More breathtaking vocal harmonies that grasp me in without hesitation. This one feels like it could be a Halloween anthem, with dark synths creating spooky atmosphere. "The Protector" let's their bass player shine from the beginning, and they sure do deliver. This song has those reverb drenched guitars that captivated me on their S/T. The synth sends me spiraling through outer space. Its reminiscent of when I destroyed Tumulus, and was floating in space thinking Varic had abandoned me, after I'd just destroyed my home planet in their name. Until Saturn 9 arrived, swooped me up, and solidified that Varic is the one true GOD. "Daylit" is something I want nothing to do with, give me the darkness! This is probably my least favorite track on the album, it's quite drawn out for my taste. Maybe if I had the vinyl version it would make more sense, as it seems like an intro. At this point in the album, it very well may be the intro for the B-side. But then "Death Realms," now we're talking. This brings me some anxiety. The music washes over me, and really makes my emotions explode out of control. Kudos to these ladies, they made The Captain shed one ice cold tear with this track. If "Lullaby" isn't a tribute to Dark Side of the Moon, then I must have eaten too much Tumulan Fungi. I know the song is called Lullaby, but it's definitely not putting me to sleep. Instead, I close my eyes and have an out of body experience. This is what it's like when you face Varic, and there's nothing more pleasant, or maybe, it's all this fungi kicking in. "Moonlit" starts soft and sweet, like a reprieve to the insane trip they've just guided me through. It picks up, but keeps it clean. This is the perfect ending to a truly psychedelic album. If you told me I was going to listen to a stoner/sludge and synth/pop mix album, I would have absolutely laughed in your face. Instead Blackwater Holylight have created an epic prog album that will definitely be kept in the database up on Saturn 9. You can grab their record on bandcamp or from Riding Easy Records.
