Given the current state of, well, everything, I've been taking a lot of walks lately. In a world that is seemingly stripping away means of comfort at an increasingly alarming rate, the prospect of fresh air, a little light exercise, and the ability to just leave the stress behind is something to which this particular scribe has clung as the weather becomes more foreboding. A good walk, however, demands a good soundtrack, and while the pure aggression of OSDM or thrash or black metal may do for the confines of our drafty scriptorium, the walk demands something a little more...meditative.
Enter the appropriately entitled "Haunting Mantra," the latest doomgaze-y single from solo guitarist and composer FUZZNAUT. I have been meaning to write a review for this thing since first listen, but better late than never, amiright?
FUZZNAUT excels in the arena of minimalism. Given the stripped-bare nature of Emilio Rizzo's approach, there is, as such, very little to distract from the essence of the song itself. "Haunting Mantra" bares a fuzz-laden aura and a penchant for a meandering-albeit-dynamic exploration of space. Across the expanse, the warm guitar builds upon itself and then collapses inward, revealing a delicate and emotive tone. As such, there's never a dull moment, although the leisurely natural progression allows time to smell the roses. All the while, the guitar itself maintains that warm embrace. If comfort could be distilled into pure aural form, this very well could be it.
"Haunting Mantra" has a droning pulse that makes it perfect for those moments wherein your mind simply requires a little room to wander. It is self-contained enough to provide certain boundaries, yet breathable enough to allow for a steadfast sense of relaxation. FUZZNAUT displays excellent musicianship in general, and this track is a prime example of a trademark composition that creates a lush environment without feeling overly complex or indulgent. In short? If you're in the mood to unwind, "Haunting Mantra"--and FUZZNAUT in general--come highly recommended.
