Readers familiar with this particular scribe's listening patterns may note that, in the grand scheme, I am more often than not drawn to the doomier and gloomier end of the multifaceted metal spectrum. But! Unbeknownst to many, the sweet strains of melodic death metal make for a non-insignificant chunk of my musical diet. When I'm feeling down, there's nothing quite like a vibrant melody riding in on the back of a boisterous riff to raise spirits a little higher. And, while it may seem sparse praise given the small dent we've made in 2021, my most-enjoyed melodeath release of the year thusfar is Means To An End, Svn.Seeker's forthcoming debut.
This small-yet-mighty collection features tight musicianship, concise and compelling composition, and, perhaps most importantly, a whole lotta sick riffage. Svn.Seeker fuckin' knocked it out of the park with this beast. Needless to say, we're pleased and honored to premiere here today the title track and second single. Give "Means to an End" a listen below, and, as always, we'll catch ye on the other side. At risk of alliterating you all to death, "Means to an End" is a barn-burning banger. While all four tracks (and instrumental intro) contained herein are stellar songs in their own right, the track in question might very well be my favorite. And that's saying something, given the might and fury of lead single "Seeking my Own Sun." "Means to an End" sums up Svn.Seeker's many strengths quite nicely indeed--the heartfelt and energetic riffs, the tasteful synth melodicism, the poignant vocal delivery, the touch of blackened thrash aggression. Despite the heft of the harsh vocals, there's a delightfully light-footed bounce that lasts throughout the breadth of the track. Svn.Seeker have a keen understanding of the fine line between restraint and bombast when it comes to melodeath dynamics, resulting in a song that carries itself with a certain flair while simultaneously feeling quite grounded. It's a notably Soilwork-esque quality, and worthy of high praise in my book. Say Svn.Seeker: "Means to an End" is the title track because it encapsulates the overall theme of the EP. Ultimately we all die and the way we die ultimately really doesn't matter in the overall scheme of things. The line "some run, some chase / for ages always the same / difference only within, the means" shows that some people try to avoid dying, some people take their own lives but at the end we all end up dying. What we do in our lives is what really defines us and our legacies, not how we die. And there ye have it! I shan't blather further. Give "Means to an End" another listen, and be sure to snag that pre-order. Svn.Seeker - Means to an End will be released Feb. 4th, 2021, and can be found here.
