Wait, don't tell me. I know what you're craving in the midst of a uniformly chaotic week: a potent dose of grunge inspired space-rock. What? Not the prescription you were expecting? Me neither. Oddly, this unique genre synthesis, courtesy of Ghost:Hello--also know as Ohio's most gloriously inventive fuzz rock outfit--does the damn trick. This psych-laden cover of the perennial (albeit underrated) "Tyler" by Texan grunge rockers Toadies adds a level of intrigue to the original track's disturbing persona. Needless to say, we're pleased to present it to you here today. Without further ado, then, check out Ghost:Hello's rendition of "Tyler" below! Say this talented trio about their efforts: this is "a new take on one of Grunge rock's arguably darkest songs." Sonically, it is objectively impossible to argue with this assessment. That "Where-Is-My-Mind" riff remains in the forefront, but gone is the classic Pixies-esque tone, replaced by a lumbering fuzzy heft. Oddly, the emphasis on a heavier tone allows the narrative itself even more menace--while the version presented by the Toadies felt uncomfortable due to a certain lack of aggression in tone that conflicted with the themes at hand, Ghost:Hello lean, instrumentally and vocally, into that sludgy darkness. There's a grisly-yet-melancholic menace at play. All the while, a spaced-out ambiance gives the entire affair an appropriately detached feeling, which adds a level of dynamism when combined with the grounded groove. It's a happy arrangement of unexpected elements. All told? Ghost:Hello's approach fits this track like a goddamn glove. This track is one of Ghost:Hello's three (excellent) contributions to a forthcoming split with fellow Ohioans Night Goat, forthcoming from Interstellar Smoke Records. As splits should, this one works quite well in the balance department, with both bands displaying their respective strengths while simultaneously allowing their co-conspirators to shine. A job well done. Check this thing out when it drops next month! Ghost:Hello / Night Goat - Split will be released from Interstellar Smoke Records on Dec. 1st, 2020
