On a typical Friday, we Sleeping Villagers spend some time looking over new releases. Today, however, is not a typical Friday. Instead, we are opting to focus entirely on bands that are donating today's proceeds to bail funds, mutual aids, and other organizations working hard to bring positive change and assistance to black individuals and communities, who, (as you are hopefully all aware,) are disproportionately impacted by police brutality and racist institutional oppression. Bandcamp is not taking a cut of sales today, so all proceeds will go directly to artists--and, in turn, into the hands of organizations that can turn dollars into action.
If you're looking to donate directly to a bail fund working to support jailed protesters, either in your city or in cities heavily impacted by police brutality and wanton arrest during this past week of demonstrations, here is a link.
Please note that this is far from an exhaustive list--simply a record of some of the artists and labels we have connected with this week. In alphabetical order:
Adzes - "Atmospheric, anticapitalist sludge for a burning world." If that doesn't sound like it would hit the spot right about now, I frankly dunno how to help you. No One Wants To Speak About It is a great album, plain and simple--as dynamic as it is massive. Proceeds will be donated to Northwest Community Bail Fund!
Ancient Hand - You all know Ancient Hand, I hope: dungeon synth artist/Avril Lavigne reviewer extraordinaire. His physical merch bundle has been reduced in price to a sweeet $10, and proceeds will be donated to the Floridian LGBTQ fund! Carrion Moth - This one man doom outfit that leans wholeheartedly into the sludgier end of the spectrum. I've only heard opening track the "The Knot," but am quite impressed with the hefty vocals in particular. Proceeds will be donated to The Liberty Fund!
Concilium - Sometimes, you just need some epic doom. In those times, I turn to Concilium. Proceeds will be donated to the National Bail Fund Network!
Dead Neanderthals - Next up we have some doomy 'n' jazzy krautrock, courtesy of this trio from Nijmegen, Netherlands. The lack of vocals works surprisingly well here, with an added focus on dreary atmosphere stealing the spotlight. Proceeds will be donated to Minnesota Freedom Fund! Feminazgul - I mean...band name of the decade, amiright? Moniker aside, No Dawn For Man is an exceptionally well-crafted album. You should listen to it. Proceeds will be donated to the National Bail Fund Network! Foretoken - Symphonic metal can be quite hard to swallow for the lovers of the extreme, but Foretoken pull off with great aplomb--particularly in the narrative department. Proceeds will be donated to Campaign Zero! Fuzznaut - Hey, another one-man project! Emilio Rizzo plays an ambient brand of post-rock-eqsue doom "that engages the listener to discover ominous sounds from minimalist architecture." Proceeds will be donated to Minnesota Freedom Fund! Gorilla Wizard - "GWiz make crush. Crush yor hed. Make magic. Make on fire. Fire good. Crush good." That just about sums it up, no? $50 will be donated regardless, and any additional proceeds will be donated as well. GraveRipper - "Blackened Deathened Thrashened Drunkened Indiana Metal." Just about sums it up, no? Proceeds from new merch will be donated to bail funds or to the Gofundme set up by George Floyd's family. High Priestess - High Priestess' brand of psych-laden doom is genuinely a wonder to behold. Truly beautiful stuff, and their latest, Casting the Circle, is a particularly strong effort. Proceeds will be donated to Black Lives Matter! Iapetus - Last year's The Body Cosmic made a bit of a splash, for good reason. This is melodic metal at it's most adventurous. Proceeds will be Official George Floyd Memorial Fund, Campaign Zero, and Minnesota Freedom Fund! Infant Island - Given our two separate reviews, it's pretty clear that we Villagers enjoy the throwback screamo of Infant Island. Proceeds from Collections 1 will be donated to Richmond Community Bail Fund! Knoll - Nothing, dare I say, hits the spot quite like a blistering application of deathgrind. Memphis' Knoll only have a demo out, but given the high quality on display here, I'm anxious to see what they cook up next. Proceeds will be donated to Memphis Community Bail Fund! Order of the Wolf - If you like your black metal A. just a touch experimental and B. steadfastly anti-facist/racist/transphobic/homophobic, OoTW is undoubtedly the band for you. Shoutout to "This Is Not a Brave New World," an undeniably stellar track. Proceeds will be donated to Black Visions Collective! Portcullis - How about some more dungeon synth? While I've only heard a single track from this artist from a village by the sea, I'm impressed by the sense of atmosphere. Proceeds will be donated to Philly Bail Fund! Purveyors of Sonic Doom - The moniker kinda sums it up, doesn't it? These guys have a new album out of man, it rips in the lo-fi-est of ways. Which is to say: we like it a whole lot. Proceeds for digital and physical sales will be donated to bail funds. Red Beard Wall - The revolution is here. The fight needs us all. All Hail. Proceeds will be donated to The Bail Project! Ripped to Shreds - If you're not familiar with this brilliant one-man death/grind outfit, I highly recommend you remedy that situation. 亂 (Luan) is on its way to securing a spot on my AoTY list. Proceeds will be donated to the National Bail Fund Network! Sciamachy - Man, I love this stuff, which should say a lot, 'cuz post-metalcore isn't usually my jam. The djenty breakdowns are thicc, and those cleans feel the furthest from sappy. A very impressive debut. Proceeds will be donated to Philly Bail Fund! Shi - "Dudes playing riffs that are discount versions of better riffs" is a far better intro than I could ever write. Not entirely accurate though. These guys have good riffs all on their lonesome. Proceeds will be donated to Louisville Community Bail Fund. Sleeping Village - Our namesake! Or...are we their namesake? Clearly, there's a missing factor. In any case, we're big fans of these old school doomsters here at the Village. Proceeds for the entire month of June will be donated to Campaign Zero! Smoulder - You know 'em. You love 'em. That's right: It's Smoulder, the epic doom/trad metal outfit that continues to rise with every subsequent release. Proceeds will be donated to the National Bail Fund Network! Temptress - This hard rockin' outfit out of Dallas brings a certain raucous swagger and a distinctly desert 'tude. There's a lovely forward momentum to everything they do. Proceeds will be donated to theBlack Lives Matter Global Network! Tómarúm - Epic progressive black metal isn't the easiest genre conglomerate to nail, but on their latest EP, Wounds Ever Expanding, this outfit from Atlanta does a damn fine job. Proceeds will be donated to the Atlanta Solidarity Fund. Turkey Vulture - Our friends in CT duo Turkey Vulture are donating the proceeds from their back catalog! If you haven't heard us talk about 'em, let this be the time that you check 'em out. Proceeds will be donated to theConnecticut Bail Fund! Undessicated - If ye recall, we recently reviewed the latest from this Virginian botano-grindcore group, who, in the words of Arzou, have some good songs. Proceeds will be donated to a TBD fund. WitchUrn - If you've read our review of WitchUrn's The Debt, you know we're huge fans. This is blackened metal with a distinctly thrashy and vicious bite, and we've been listening to it consistently for weeks. Highly recommend this one! Proceeds will be donated to Free The 350!
