Once more, we bear witness to yet another 2025 rap album that, if released any other year, would have easily served as a strong AOTY contender. The competition this year is fierce, almost unbelievably so. The arena is packed to the brim with viable champions, and the brilliant (albeit confusingly entitled) Lei Keli ft. 47 / For Promotional Use Only has found a comfortable position among my roster of 2025 favorites. And yet, despite demonstrating a clear artistic vision whilst running the gamut from badass bangers to heartfelt introspection, this project has received far less hype than it deserves. Indeed, Leikeli47 has been unfairly overlooked and underrated for far too long. In this era where rappers are lauded for their lyricism, experimentation, and willingness to put in the effort, where are the laudations for Leikeli47? With every release, she only gets better. While 2022's Shape Up undeniably contained some very high highs, Lei Keli ft. 47 / For Promotional Use Only is her most cohesive album to date from a quality standpoint. There's pretty significant variety on display here, with a radiating assurance and an infectious energy permeating the project as a whole.
At her most punchy and visceral, Leikeli47 attacks the mic with a notable vibrancy and expressive bombast. When in this unpredictable and aggressive mode, Leikeli47's tone fondly reminds me of the hunger Angel Haze displayed on Back to the Woods. Listen to the multiple voices employed across "Famous," and tell me she hasn't mastered the art of hard-as-fuck delivery while simultaneously maintaining a cool-as-a-cucumber demeanor. "Stella's Groove" features a particularly dramatic inflection that would feel overly grandiose or tryhard coming from pretty much anyone else, but she nails the delivery with an admirable coolness and sincerity. She sells her own charisma effectively. All the while, her ability to switch up inflection and flow is intensely engaging, with various examples littered throughout the project where a sudden syllabic emphasis shifts a track's entire energy.
And yet, somehow, she sounds even more stoic and composed in the moments that pull from a more overt dancehall aesthetic. These gentler tracks that comprise the album's midsection aren't as aggressive, but they aren't necessarily tempered either. Leikeli47's softer deliver is still sharp--on the sensual "Soft Serve," for example, her presence is thrumming and imposing. On these more R&B oriented songs, her sense of self remains singular and identifiable. Despite this clarity, I've had a hard time pulling a sample track, as every song serves to showcase something distinct. But regardless of a track's particular sonic direction, it frequently sounds like she is enjoying herself. That feeling is, as aforementioned, infectious. It is very hard not to feel good while listening to this album. Beyond the intense charisma of her vocals, her beat selection is stellar. The production notably avoids falling into a sense of uniformity, with a rotating cast of genre influence dancing in and out of the limelight. Some songs are elastic and exaggerated, reveling in the movement they invariably incite. Some shed the bass-driven bounce for a sparse and minimalistic vibe. Some are whooping and urgent--take "450." Some are sunny and dubby--take "Sandhills." Some are smooth yet subtly off-kilter--take "HNIC," which after much pondering is the track I chose to represent the whole. And lastly, this project is very efficient. At a trim 29 minutes, Lei Keli ft. 47 / For Promotional Use Only is a clear-cut case of all killer, no filler. The 11 songs never overstay their welcome, and frequently end leaving me craving another verse. In sum, Leikeli47 demands that the audience enters her world, and I do understand that a fair number of listeners may find her inherent eccentricity to be a bit of a hurdle. But regardless: if you A. like rap and B. have been sleeping on Leikeli47, I highly recommend arising from slumber and giving this one a listen (or two, or three, or forty seven. Whatever the case may be.) Leikeli47 - Lei Keli ft. 47 / For Promotional Use Only was released June 13th, 2025 via Thirty Tigers. Find it on Bandcamp here!
